Note to self:

The privilege to be free …

By Bernadette Kathryn, LMT, IHLC

When we lose the right to be different,

we lose the privilege to be free.

~ Charles Evans Hughes

To be free is a privilege that we have the pleasure of enjoying every day. We are free to choose, free to do or not do, we are free to be who we are. To be true to yourself is a blessing, we can explore our talents, interests, and curiosities. We can study, work and travel with the knowledge that we are free to choose. How do you like to exercise your privilege to be free? What does freedom to be mean to you?

Many countries do not have the privilege of freedom — religious freedom, freedom of speech, and personal freedom. Living in the United States of America is a privilege in many ways, with all of our political and financial issues, we still enjoy a life of freedom in many ways others are not afforded. Activists and journalist in many countries suffer violence, prosecution, fines and detention for expressing their truths. Free speech is restricted to the point that some artists must have special licenses to perform in public. Governments control broadcasts, print media and often the internet is run by the government and limited due to the expense demanded by the establishment.

Some countries require the practice of specific religions and any other religion is prohibited. Women are not permitted to drive cars or leave their home without the escort of a relative male accompanying them. Corruption and bribery are pervasive at every level of the government. All forms of protest are illegal and political dissidents are executed or sent to prison camps.

It seems to me (IMHO) the trick is to enjoy the right to be different and the privilege to be free by the embracing the old adage — live and let live. Respect your neighbors right to choose and practice — the Golden Rule — ‘Do unto others as you would have them do unto you’. Let us live together in peace, love, and respect — let us look for ways to create a win-win situation for our family, friends, and neighbors. We are all in this world together and we need each other to make our lives rich with a community.
