Your Challenge Today:
We must do …
By Bernadette Kathryn, LMT, IHLC
Knowing is not enough; we must apply.
Willing is not enough; we must do.
~ Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
We must do what is right for ourselves. Self-care is a concept that is often difficult for many of us; we feel compelled to take care of others first, and then when the world (our world) is OK, we can take care of ourselves. Personal sacrifice is a mainly female trait that is grounded in service and compassion ~ which are excellent and necessary motivating factors ~ we must not lose sight of ourselves in this process.
I am always reminded of the flight attendant on the airplane, “if you are traveling with an infant or child, first put the oxygen mask on yourself and then secure it on your loved one.” A powerful statement that reminds us to take care of ourselves so that we CAN be available for others. If and when we run ourselves into the ground taking care of everyone else, work, family, friends, neighbors, spouse ~ we will ultimately burn out and not be able to be present for anyone until we recover.
We must strive to find the place where we can be available to our loved ones while staying true to yourself!

This is such a timely post, just last night Sam and I were faced with a challenge from a family member of his who wants us to change our wedding date. I was actually considering trying to do this and driving myself crazy in the process. Then I came to my senses and reminded myself that we had already made this important decision, and it will stand.
